THE SHORT REPORT

11/18 - St. Thomas Report.

Fishing was good today. The wahoo tournament went well, but it appears there were no winners for the truck. St. Thomas competed with St. Croix and the final results will be known tomorrow. Freedom backed in with five flags. They released a triple header of sailfish and went 2 for 4 on the blues. They'll be fishing the next two days... so we'll see how the November moon stacks up. It's been a great stretch.

11/18 - St. Thomas Report.
On schedule the moon and the fish showed up at the same time. Thurs. Marlin Prince fished a few hours and raised two blues, releasing one. Yesterday (Sat. 11/17) Freedom saw two blues and released both. They also had a few knockdowns they think from whites and sailfish. Freedom and MP will be fishing the next few days and we will be reporting. Today (Sun) the Club's Wahoo Windup is on and the boats are all out fishing. We'll be there to get a photo of the winner and maybe a piece of fresh fish. The largest over 75 lbs. wins a new Toyota Truck. Check it out VIGFC website

We're getting started on the next edition of "On The Edge" our tournament magazine. Ads are being solicited for this publication which will be out in time for the Big Game Room and the Miami Intl. Boat Show. 20,000 copies are distributed to our tournament clients and to tackle stores and marine related businesses up and down the East Coast, Gulf Coast and Caribbean. If your company would like to be included please let us know. Closes out Dec. 31. Rates are affordable and checks are made out to the VI Council, Boy Scouts of America. Writers are invited to contribute. Contact our editor Murray Earle - Toll free: 888-234-7484 or 340-775-9500.

We are taking advantage of this window of time (without any tournaments to run) to work on the establishment of our new Marine Vocation Program (MVP) and to plan for next year. We wish to thank those who have provided the MVP program with early financial support. MVP kids will grow up with the promise of gainful employment in the marine/fishing industry. Our plan is to also include the youth in the foreign countries through summer camp programs. An endowment fund is being established and founding support is being encouraged. Call us toll free 1-888-234-7484 or email: loveto@islands.vi for more information.

Mon. Nov. 19, 2007 Shown right are the latest 200 "hits" to our website. As you can see by the red circles, fishermen around the globe are checking in. Today we salute Africa! To date (2007) we've had 27,917 unique visitors; who have read 122,128 pages. Thank you for visiting our site.

Plan a visit to our booth at the 5th Annual Big Game Room (BGR) during the Miami Intl. Boat Show, Feb. 14-18, 2008. Its a sea of fishermen all schooled up in one place!

"The best place for straight marlin fishing I've found is on the North Drop. For example, we went 7 for 13 there in one day over an October moon."

The Pirates of the Caribbean are eyeballing this booty with envy! Our newly developing Spanish Main Series (SMS) offers a unique angler prize that is designed and sponsored by the world famous Bernard Passman Galleries. The SMS is made up of 5 events, each fishing in destinations that abound with billfish! Teams compete in Venezuela, Punta Cana DR, San Juan PR, St. Thomas VI and Boqueron, located on the S.W. end of Puerto Rico

Like the BTS, its sister series, the Spanish Main requires team participation in terms of a "series" competition - but each leg is also an "Open" - meaning the cash, tackle prizes and Calcutta may be won by non-series boats that join in from the area. Note however, the rare Spanish coin of the 1500 and 1600's is offered as a once in a lifetime gift only to the top "Series Angler" of each event.

An emerald replaces the gold screw indicating the leg(s) that the angler has won. After a leg is won, the angler moves on, trying to win a different leg and adding an additional emerald. The goal at this point is to be the first to win all five legs. Tournament "legs" are represented in a clockwise position. The first ever winner was Jose Valdes, Jr. of Team Mojito during the 2007 SMS/Venezuela Open. The following SMS/Punta Cana Open in the DR was won by angler Carlos Chapel of Team Peje. The SMS/San Juan Open leg was won by Luis Infanzon of Team Mojito/Lady Lou. The SMS/ABMT USVI Open was won by Luis Nevarez of Team Peje. And lastly in the series, the Boqueron Open was won by Team Peje - with Luis Bacardi of Team Rum Bum winning the Bernard Passman 1500's gold coin as Top Angler. Congratulations to Carlos Garcia and Team Peje for their "Best of Series" win during the inaugural year of the Spanish Main Series.

The Spanish Main Series is a very competitive fishing competition. "Points" are earned by the release of blue marlin, white marlin, spearfish and sailfish. The areas fished are accessible Caribbean destinations, making it easy for international anglers to reach. Line test of 20 - 50 lb. is used, depending on the area, and naturally the lighter the line, the higher the points. Team members may change from event to event and observers are supplied.

A Treasure Chest is created by the Team Captains who fish the first leg of the series. This pot is won "Winner Takes All" (less 20% to BSA) by the team with the most points at the end of the series. Teams pick their highest three scores in order to win. It takes team strategy, angler skill and a bit of luck to win the Spanish Main Series!

Proceeds of the SMS go to the VI Council Boy Scouts and to other youth organizations on the various islands.
